4miss-titled but good product for oxidized fiberglass gel coat
By KB
like the previous reviewer, this item is miss-titled, it is Meguiar's "85" not "80". Which is good because I wanted 85 not 80. I've been using a full quart of this product every year for 4 years on the oxidized gel-coat of a now 12 year old 40' fiberglass boat. it does a nice job. I use a full sized variable speed power polisher, running slowly about 2000-3000 rpm, start with a new 9" wool bonnet every time, light to med pressure. the reason I like using Meguiar's 85 is that the actual polishing agent is fine enough to cut through the oxidized layer of the gel coat (it's a red boat) not leaving swirls like other 'aggressive' compounds in this category but doesn't cut so aggressively that I burn through the corners and edges if inattentive. only down side is actually a positive for me, it cuts relatively slowly so quite controllable meaning my arms get pretty tired holding a power polisher for a couple days. I don't recommend this for hand polishing, it's too slow, I have to use a more aggressive traditional compound in the corners and places I can't get the power polisher into then use '85' by hand to remove the marks from the traditional compound and allowing it to blend reasonably well with the power polished surfaces. Another nice thing about '85' is that doesn't require soap to remove the polishing residue like many other products so I can wipe off any residue with a rag when dry then wax right after polishing without soap and water washing which is good because the boat yard I do this work required controlling all effluents, dust and liquids, from working at the facility. hope this helps you make your decision.
